Now that flu season is in full force, it's important to remember prevention tips to protect you and your baby. This is even more important today with the outbreak of a new respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus. Like other flu viruses, this is spread through the air by coughing and sneezing, touching hands, and objects with the virus and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands. Here are prevention methods from the CDC to prevent getting cold, flu, and the coronavirus.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Make sure your child washes their hands:
Before eating (including snacks)
After a trip to the bathroom
Whenever they come in from playing outdoors
After touching an animal like a family pet
After sneezing or coughing if they touch their nose or cover their mouth
When someone in the household is ill
Other tips for avoiding the flu:
Use a hand sanitizer when you can't wash your hands, although washing with soap and water is always best
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Clean and disinfect objects
Clean and disinfect surfaces (including restaurant tables tops and airplane seating areas)
Invest in adult and child face masks. Make sure they cover your nose, mouth and fit securely!
